Discovery said that they would bundle their streaming services, selling users a package that included Disney+, Hulu and Max. For years, the company has offered services like Netflix and Apple TV+ as add-ons to its existing television bundle, acting as a vendor for those companies. Comcast, which has millions of broadband and cable television customers across the United States, has different incentives to bundle streaming services together than many of its competitors do. Many other internet providers have sold bundles that include streaming services. When the short-lived short-form streaming service Quibi launched, T-Mobile offered to bundle its wireless offering with that service.

Negotiations between Comcast and Bally Sports' operator Diamond Sports Group, which has been under bankruptcy protection since last year, broke down following a dispute over terms. Pay-TV distributors have been losing customers at a fast clip in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast had more than 13.6 million pay-TV customers as of March 31, after losing 487,000 subscribers during the first quarter. Some regional sports networks have begun offering streaming options to customers at a price point that doesn't upend the pay-TV model. In addition to Comcast, Diamond has held negotiations in recent weeks with Charter Communications — which provides pay-TV services under the Spectrum brand — DirecTV and Cox Communications.

A federal judge in California dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X against the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate, writing in a judgement Monday that the "case is about punishing the Defendants for their speech." X sued the research group in July, accusing it of implementing a "scare campaign" to drive away advertisers. The company also accused CCDH of improperly accessing data from the platform and selectively picking posts to "falsely claim" that X is "overwhelmed with harmful content." CCDH also found that Twitter failed to act on 89% of anti-Jewish hate speech and 97% of anti-Muslim hate speech on the platform. In one instance, X has sued an Israeli web data collection company called Bright Data over its allegedly unauthorized scraping of data from its social media platform.

Cable companies are trying to catch up with the times, though, and now want you to replace your clunky set-top cable boxes with sleek, Apple TV-like streaming devices – gadgets that could save customers money. Xumo is one step in cable companies’ broader strategy to combine live TV with streaming – essentially rebundling streaming services like the old cable bundle. Moving from a cable box to Xumo will save cable customers money. It’s a shift for cable companies that long relied on trying to get households to add as many set-top cable boxes in their homes as possible. It could be a while before the ancient cable box completely disappears, however.

Media Matters was served a double whammy on Monday, after reporting on X's advertising strategy. Elon Musk is now suing the watchdog, and Texas AG Ken Paxton is investigating the group for fraud. The report, published Thursday, triggered an advertiser exodus from X, after which Musk declared that he'd file a "thermonuclear" lawsuit against Media Matters. In a statement to BI, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said X's lawsuit was "frivolous" and "meant to bully X's critics into silence." "Media Matters created an alternate account and curated the posts and advertising appearing on the account's timeline to misinform advertisers about the placement of their posts." These technology failures during a major scaling event — dubbed success disasters — weren't alone. Ticketmaster's failure during their scaling event was just one kind of success disaster — the overburdening of the system's capacity. Success disasters may be common, but that doesn't make them acceptable, especially if a company is offering products or services considered essential. The right answer really depends on the starting point and what scaling events are anticipated. Comcast beat analyst estimates on Thursday when it reported its second-quarter results, as higher pricing helped offset a continued slowdown in its broadband business. The company now groups its Xfinity-branded broadband, cable TV and wireless services with its U.K.-based Sky. Higher average rates helped to offset second-quarter subscriber losses, leading to broadband revenue growth of 4.4%. Comcast and its peers have experienced slowing growth in the broadband segment following quarters of robust gains during the early days of the Covid pandemic. The drop in domestic advertising was largely due to lower revenue at NBCUniversal's TV networks, which was partially offset by the leap in Peacock revenue.
